New Paintings to start 2012

Greetings in 2012 with health and happiness to you and your family in the New Year!

It is a busy January in the studio since I have a number of paintings underway.  The "Solitary Sunflower" and "Uphill Fall" are two new entries from this year in the Oils and Pastel Photo Galleries.  It has been a long time goal of mine to do that single sunflower in such a large format and I have to say it was an exciting venture, doing a 30x24  painting with the palette knife.   Hooray, it felt so good!

The Fall picture was again as much fun with the beautiful warm glow of the leaves and the amber colored shadows on the steep hillside.  The long format of 24x12 is so appealing in this composition and strives to give the viewer the same feeling I experienced at first sight.

Just letting you know, there are two art shows  I will be doing in March.  One is a group show at Montana Art and Framing on Ronan Street in Missoula and the other is the Western Heritage Show in Great Falls, MT, where I'll be in Room #206 at the Holiday Inn.  Specific details will be available here in February.

Hope you have a good January and I'll be "talking at you again real soon."

New Paintings in the Plein Air

Plein Air painting (which means outdoor painting instead of in the studio) has been great this fall.  The leaves were late in changing colors and held on til just a few weeks ago.  It has been a wondrous fall to paint outdoors and we even got out in the cold.  (Getting brave or just not too smart but hand warmers help.)

Missoula folks will recognize some of the areas such as the Rattlesnake and Greenough Park.  But we didn't limit ourselves to this area, going to the Blackfoot on Highway 200 and Clearwater Junction near Lincoln, MT.  There is one painting on the Shields River in Paradise Valley, plus a vista of the Absorka Mountains majestic over the great Yellowstone River.  The Gallatin River at Big Sky was done in July and the water was wild and wonderful to see, but not safe to trout fish yet.  Seems to me that river is like that a lot, exciting and unpredictable.  Hope you will check out the Plein Air Gallery.

Today we are getting plenty of snow, but I don't mind since I'm painting in the studio these days.  There are two shows I am preparing and painting for in March, the Western Heritage Art Show in Great Falls at the Holiday Inn, March  14-18, 2012 and a spring group show at Montana Art and Framing, Missoula, opening March 2, 2012 and showing for the month.  I am pretty excited about both and will have a number of my plein air paintings for you to see at both places.

It is good to keep in contact, folks, and I hope you enjoy my new works. Thanks for your kind notes on the website, it is good to hear from you.   Have a nice Thanksgiving and I'll talk at you again, real soon.

CODY ART SHOW OPENS THURSDAY

The 4th Annual Cody Art Show, upstairs at the Historic Irma Hotel, opens Thursday, September 22-24.   Artists of the Blue Buffalo Artists Group will show original paintings and sculptures in a wide variety of styles and genre in the elegant upstairs rooms of the Historical Irma Hotel.  You will get a glimpse into Cody's history as well and all is open and free to the public.

The Blue Buffalo Artists' Show and Sale is held during the same week as the Rendezvous Royale and Buffalo Bill Show and art enthusiasts from across the country travel to Cody to enjoy the art and support the Museum fund raiser. I am sorry to miss doing the show this year with this fine group of artists and wish them all  well.  I always enjoy seeing the Buffalo Bill Museums and have enjoyed watching some of the major quick draws done at the Buffalo Bill by artists from all over the country.

Go for it, Blue Buffalo Artists!  Hi to just a few of my artist friends from around the country, Pat Schermerhorn, Diane Greenwood, Bob Tompkins, John Peterson, Berna Ost.

PASTEL SOCIETY OF THE NORTHERN ROCKIES SMALL WORKS SHOW & SALE

Good Day Again!

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Pastel Society of the Northern Rockies all member show opens in Hamilton, MT October 7 - November 7.  This exhibit of small works is all original fine art using at least 80% soft pastel and the show will be at the Frame Shop & Gallery, 325 W. Main Street.    There will be an evening reception on Friday, October 7th at 6:00pm.  I will be doing a pastel demo in front of the gallery during the opening and I hope to see you and chat it up!

In August I did an oil demo in front of the Art Focus and talked with a lot of you folks.  In fact, I only got one skinny line of trees in on that canvas, but had lots of fun seeing you and I think you enjoyed seeing a work in progress with the palette knife.  "So come on down" and see the excitement of pastels through out the gallery and watch a work in progress...or just see the show and say howdy.

Plein Air Painting on the Yellowstone in August

Greetings Folks!

Absaroka Mountains Over the Yellowstone  (Private Collection)

Time is flying and though I am busy painting, I have been remiss in keeping you informed.  Sorry about that.  I wanted to tell you about a great paint out I participated in the first part of August this year, "Plein Air Painting on the Yellowstone ."  This third annual event was put on by the Livingston Center for Art and Culture (www.livingstoncenter.org) and they also have a nice show following the week long paint out.  The people in the area are all so friendly and the supporters of the Art Center are enthusiastic and keep us coming back.    Many of the same artists are in the group yearly  like Teresa Garland Warner, Steve Spencer, Shirl Ireland and Parke Goodman  to mention a few.

Again this year,  the welcoming barbeque was pretty cool and at one of the Museum Patron's home.  The setting with 360 views,  was a plein air painters paradise.  Thanks to those folks!  The week was spent near the Shields and Yellowstone Rivers painting and Wednesday we painted all day on the Levy at Yellowstone River in Sacajawea Park.  Later we attended the Farmer's Market and our B&B Friends and Hosts, bought a big Barbeque dinner for each of us!  Aren't we the lucky artists!

Besides painting outdoors, we again set up our paraphernalia  in the A's B&B for touch up and framing.  These folks are always so good to us and do "lots" of favors during the event for us.  They even come to visit and cheer us on at our painting sites.  It was a fun week for painting and visiting and good to be with the people in Livingston, MT again.  That is what keeps me coming back, all these nice folks.
